The Game of Thrones - George R. R. Martin

In all the reviews I've read (a metric shit tonne, if you'll excuse my language), George R.R. Martin has been called the American J.R.R. Tolkien. Really weird for dyed-in-the-wool fantasy fans, yes.  However comma even though Game of Thrones is, basically, a 600+ page prequel, mostly setting up background and characters, it's addictively compelling.  If you actually manage to put a few days between Game of Thrones and its sequel, Clash of Kings, you might think, "Nothing really happened in it", but, if you're like me, you spend your 8 hours at work jonesing for the next fix.

If you're an epic fantasy fan, and/or you can tolerate a book that sets everything up and doesn't resolve anything but leaves you addicted and hanging, you'll be like me.

That is, you'll wait patiently for Game of Thrones to be available at your local public library, and then go blow 60 bucks buying the rest (i.e., currently published box set) because you're not that patient.

All I can say is that I talked to people who love it and the genre, read the reviews, and I was still blown away...even though Game of Thrones still, basically, sets everything up for the rest of the series.
